March 23, 2017 - Santa Monica Airport Association Members Dave Hopkins, VP and CFI Joe from Santa Monica Flyers attended the Santa Monica High School career day today, speaking to 25 students and about careers in aviation. Students expressed desires for a diverse range of careers, from pilot, flight attendant, mechanic, travel agent, flight test engineer and military pilot.
Four students were currently learning to fly at SMO.
The three panelists had a diverse range of experience, with three pilots certificates and two with instructor certificates between them. Gus, from the SMPD expounded on how he had flown with the airlines for seven years, then switched careers to SMPD, now with the harbor patrol. Panelists took questions for about half an hour and highlighted the fact we have a great airport in the city where you can get information on many aviation careers. The SMAA monthly events were highlighted for 2017, including Flight Training Day in July.
This is an annual event at Santa Monica High School. SMAA members are encouraged to attend in future and help the next generation understand and access aviation careers.
